This course covers all the key skills to install, fault find, inspect and test electric vehicle charging points. This really is an exciting new sector from which existing electricians can branch out into and generate extra income or become a specialist installer. With petrol prices increasing and environmental concerns, more people are turning to electric vehicles.

With this course, you will be taught how to design, specify, install, fault find, test and inspect electric vehicle charging points, both for the commercial and domestic sector. This includes the on street electric charging points that you may have seen in many town and city centres.

There is an increasing demand for new electric vehicle charging points but too few installers to roll them out. This is already a booming market which is due to get much bigger. By arming yourself with a new skill such as electric vehicle charging installation you will be getting in early on a sector which should prove to be very lucrative in coming years.

Who Should Attend?
This course is for existing electricians who are looking to become a specialist installer or are wanting to branch out.

Entry Requirements
As this qualification covers the installation of charging points in domestic, on-street and commercial settings, it is expected that candidates are practising electricians with a formal Level 3 qualification:

  • Be competent to work on domestic and commercial electrical installations (with a minimum Level 3 Qualification such as C&G 2365 or NVQ)
  • Be able to correctly install and terminate pvc/pvc cable (twin and earth) and Steel Wire armoured cable (SWA)
  • Be able to carry out an initial verification (inspection and testing) on an electrical installation and complete the necessary paperwork
  • Be up to date with the latest Building Regulations requirements
  • Be up to date with the latest 18th Edition wiring regulations

Method of Assessment
Online multiple choice exam and a practical assessment.

Course Content
This course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to Electric Vehicles - electric vehicle types, characteristics, charging requirements, safety considerations
  • Overview of Electric Vehicle charging - modes of charging and requirements, restrictions
  • Electrical Installation Requirements - supply, earthing, planning permission, explosive atmospheres, protection, labelling, control and risk assessment
  • Installation - practical domestic and commercial installation
  • Inspection, Test and Certification - commissioning and DNO paperwork
  • System Test, Fault Finding and Examination - includes both a practical and written assessments
