About the course
The Site Supervisors' Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) two day course is intended for those who have, or are about to acquire, supervisory responsibilities. It provides supervisors with an understanding of health, safety, welfare and environmental issues, as well as their legal responsibilities relevant to their work activities. It will highlight the requirement to promote health and safety to supervise effectively.

The SSSTS course is endorsed by the Major Contractors Group as the standard training for all supervisors working on MCG sites and, as such, the course must be delivered as laid out in the following programme.

Site Supervisors' Safety Training Scheme - Who should attend?

The SSSTS course is for first line managers - those who have, or are about to acquire supervisory responsibilities. It provides an introduction to health and safety, welfare and environmental issues for those requiring an understanding of their legal responsibilities relevant to their work activities. It will provide a sound knowledge base to enable them to give valuable assistance in safely managing a construction site.

SSSTS - Course Content

The Course aims to ensure that all those given supervisory responsibilities understand:

  • Why they are carrying out their identified duties
  • What is expected of them
  • To ensure that they contribute to the safety of the workplace.

At the end of the SSSTS course delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the problems of the industry
  • Have an understanding of how health and safety law is structured and how it applies to supervisors
  • Identify how their supervisory role fits in with the management structure in controlling the site safely
  • Carry out risk assessments and understand the need for method statements
  • Carry out effective site inspections, toolbox talks and method statement briefings
  • Be able to monitor site activities effectively
  • Understand the importance of timely intervention when bad practice is identified.

Candidates will gain a Site Supervisorís Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS)  certificate

Site Supervisors' Safety Training Scheme - Course Units

The course covers The Health & Safety at Work Act and the regulations relevant to the construction industry. To include:

  • Health and Safety Law
  • Developing a Health and Safety Management System
  • Occupational Health
  • Fire Prevention and Control
  • Risk Assessment and Method Statements
  • Hazardous Substances (COSHH)
  • CDM Regulations
  • Working At Height
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Manual Handling
  • Accidents and First Aid
  • Intervention skills and behaviour.

It also includes recent changes in accepted working practices. For those who successfully complete the course there is a recognised certificate.

Site Supervisors' Safety Training Scheme -  Method of Assessment:

Completion of the course is assessed through participation throughout the course. There is also multiple choice examination at the end of the course to assess knowledge.
